U.S. Capitol This Week Dec 19 - 22

U.S. Congress

  • Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL) has called for a Google probe after Google Maps "incorrectly" eliminated a pregnancy clinic. Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL) says he wrote to Google CEO Sundar Pichai urging that comparable cases of unexplainable censoring be made public.

“Woke corporations have been getting away with silencing conservative voices and values for a long time, and I have had enough.”
— Rep. Jerry Carl (R-AL)
  • Google Maps couldn't find D.C.'s Capitol Hill Crisis Pregnancy Center last week, and Google said that the item "was incorrectly removed and we have since reinstated it." Carl raised his worries about why the item was removed in the first place, as well as whether there are more comparable circumstances that have yet to be brought to light.

Supreme Court

  • The Supreme Court re-entered the abortion issue this week, agreeing to hear an appeal from the Biden administration on access to the abortion drug mifepristone. The 5th Circuit's August order permitted mifepristone to remain on the market in areas where abortion is legal, and now the court replied to pleas from both the Justice Department and Danco, the producer of Mifeprex. However, changes made by the Food and Drug Administration since 2016 to make it easier to access the drug, such as raising the gestational age for its use to 10 weeks (rather than seven), allowing medication mailing to patients, lowering the dosage, allowing telehealth prescribing, and authorizing providers other than physicians to prescribe the drug, were not upheld.

  •  In response, Senator Padilla as well as other 41 senators joined a resolution which stated that the Food and Drug Administration’s judgment of Mifepristone as safe and effective is “based on scientific judgment.” Abortion lobbies say that if access to mifepristone is restricted, pregnancies can still be terminated with misoprostol. It is crucial to remember, however, that misoprostol alone may cause greater damage to the women’s bodies and is not as effective as the combination of both medicines. The Supreme Court's ruling in this case will almost certainly have far-reaching repercussions for abortion access and restrictions.

Planned Parenthood

  • Planned Parenthood is looking at the trans hormone business with greed. They began delivering hormone therapy to transgender patients in 2005, and in 2022, 41 of 49 regional locations have provided so-called transgender care. Notably, Planned Parenthood's engagement in the gender hormone market has grown dramatically in the last three years.

  • While the national Planned Parenthood organization does not publicly reveal data on transgender medical treatments such as gender hormone therapy, 12 of the 41 regional branches have disclosed pertinent data in the last three years. According to a survey completed by the Daily Caller News Foundation, the number of visits and transgender services provided at Planned Parenthood clinics increased by about 125% between 2020 and 2022. The regional branches that submitted statistics recorded 17,036 visitors in 2020, compared to 38,337 in 2022.
