On the Legacy of Charlie Kirk

Source: WPR

The news of Charlie Kirk’s horrific assassination quickly spread around the globe; from the moment the bullet fatally hit Charlie, news stations were frantically reporting on the scene, and details spread like wildfire. He has become more than just a right-wing thinker: Charlie has left an indelible mark on the history of the United States of America, and his death sparked a movement. This movement is one of free thought and speech, of Christian love and prayer.

Charlie was assassinated during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University, a horrific crime shocking the conscience of thousands of students who witnessed what human beings were never meant to see — a human being murdering another.

This horror united people to oppose the restriction of speech and thought, and American freedoms more broadly. American flags were held half-mast, and vigils in commemoration of Charlie took place across the nation, from Salt Lake City in Utah, to Washington, D.C., and Jacksonville, Florida. Across the globe, people gathered to voice their support and prayers for Charlie and his family.

In his advocacy, Charlie militated for a Western Civilization that would return to its founding principles, built on Western and Christian philosophical and theological truths, with an emphasis on the role of the traditional family as the building block of society. Throughout the years, Charlie’s Turning Point USA has become the leading organization impacting young conservatives around the nation. After his brutal death, the already big support skyrocketed and turned into a cultural awakening.

Many, along with President Donald Trump, called Charlie a “martyr.” Posthumously, President Trump also awarded Charlie the highest civilian honor: the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Perhaps the most inspiring moment amidst this tragedy happened during Charlie’s memorial when his wife Erika told a stadium of over 70,000 people, “I forgive him”, referring to the person responsible for Charlie’s death. Her words made headline news on multiple stations and moved the millions who heard them.

Dr. Ben Carson, a former neurosurgeon who worked under the Trump Administration as the Secretary of Housing, said that “you cannot be the land of the free if you are not the home of the brave”, alluding to Charlie’s heroism. Tucker Carlson, Anna Paulina Luna, and many others also made remarks about the life and bravery of Charlie.

When asked during interviews and podcasts, Charlie always said that he wanted to be remembered for his faith and devotion to Christ.
