A new EU-wide campaign called “My Voice, My Choice” has collected over 1 million signatures and is asking the EU to fund travel for abortions. While it claims to support women’s rights, it is relying on a distorted vision of empowerment, one that frames the killing of the unborn as a right.
The initiative demands that the European Union fund abortions abroad for women who cannot obtain them in their home countries. For example, a woman in Hungary beyond the legal time limit could receive EU taxpayer money to travel to the Netherlands for a late-term abortion.
The campaign has made the false claim on Instagram that, unless the EU passes this initiative, 20 million women could die from lack of access to abortion.
That’s extreme fear-mongering. They claim that any woman living in a European region with restrictive abortion laws, high conscientious objection, or no free state abortions lacks "safe" options—and thus risks "unsafe" ones. In reality:
The vast majority of these women never seek an abortion in the first place;
Europe’s relatively high wealth and living standards make maternal deaths (from any cause) extremely rare;
Multiplying that microscopic risk by millions of women, who mostly don’t want abortions, is fearmongering.
Weighing in on the campaign, Rebecca Oas, Research Director at C-Fam, said, “What the campaign entirely leaves out (and wants you to forget):
The vast majority of abortions carried out in Europe are not due to maternal life or extreme health reasons at all;
The ones who face a far more credible risk of death are children in the womb, not the mothers who carry them.”
Yet, while this campaign frames a non-problem as a crisis, it risks creating a real one, by promoting the destruction of unborn lives and ignoring the deeper social and emotional wounds abortion leaves behind.
Meanwhile, the EU has cut back programmes that once supported mothers and families, even though the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights explicitly protects maternity and family life.
Several Members of Parliament (MEPs) have tabled a resolution urging the European Commission to back the “My Voice, My Choice” citizens’ initiative, and MEPs will vote on it in plenary. The real power, however, rests with the Commission, which will decide whether to act or to let the initiative die by March 2026.

One of Us, a coalition of over 50 pro-life NGOs, collected 1,897,588 signatures in 2014, nearly double the 1 million signatures of “My Voice, My Choice.” The initiative demanded that no EU money ever fund abortion-providing NGOs, embryo-destroying research, or abortifacient drugs in aid projects. On 28 May 2014, the Commission refused to act, stating: “The current funding rules are legal… no change is planned.”
If Brussels had no authority to weigh in on abortion in 2014, it has no authority to pay for cross-border abortions in 2026.
